6.MUSEO EGIZIO

Providing extraordinary insights into to the world of the ancients beyond Rome and Greece, the Museo Egizio is the largest repository devoted to Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo and is among Italy’s most visited museums.

Savoy rulers, intrigued by this extinct culture and the pharaonic world, underwrote expeditions to unearth artifacts, or acquired collections of rare objects, as Napoleon’s Egyptian forays in the late 1700s upped the interest in Egyptology throughout Europe.

Among the museum’s many highlights: the Tomb of Kha and Merit, the Ramsses II and Amenhotep I statues, and the papyrus collection, which renowned philologist Jean-François Champollion studied in his work decoding hieroglyphics.
